CONFERENCE GOAL: Family planning and reproductive health care takes place in a complex network of political, social, medical and environmental worlds. This conference will explore the connections between family planning in Minnesota and some of the key issues of health care and the environment. The focus will be the nexus of Minnesota family planning as an environmental consideration on water supply, transportation systems and agriculture. Participants will hear from some of the leading experts in the fields of family planning, demography and environmental policy. The conference will provide a fascinating look across the physical, social and political landscapes in which family planning takes place in Minnesota and help attendees understand the impact their work has on our state, our society and our environment.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:Everyone involved in family planning and reproductive health care, environmental
justice, and health care professionals, public health professionals and volunteers and those interested in public policy advocacy.

PARTICIPANTS WILL:Hear from the leader of one of the largest family planning organizations in the United States on challenges facing family planning in the political arena; Learn the impact of family planning on health care, demographics and
the environment from experts in these fields; Hear from the a national leader from the Sierra Club on challenges
we face in protecting the environment while balancing our population needs with state resources, Network with professionals and volunteers in family planning, reproductive health, public policy and the environment.

MarilynKeefeKEYNOTE SPEAKER: Marilyn Keefe currently the Acting President and CEO of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), an education and advocacy organization whose members include federally funded family planning clinics, health care providers, and reproductive rights activists across the United States. Ms. Keefe has been at NFPRHA since 1993. For 13 years, she was the Vice President of Public Policy. In that capacity, she directed NFPRHA’s work with Congress, the Administration, the federal Department of Health and Human Services, and other women’s rights organizations to ensure affordable access to primary health care services to women both in the United States and abroad. Ms. Keefe holds a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicag.o

JOINT SESSION SPEAKER: Martha McMurry senior research analyst with the State Demographic Center at the Minnesota Department of Administration in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her responsibilities include preparing population, household, and labor force projections and tracking demographic trends. She received a Ph.D. in sociology from Indiana University.

Sarah FairchildSarah Fairchild, Program Director, Sierra Club’s Global Population & Environment Program. Ms. Fairchild has extensive international experience training and organizing for the advocacy and education of women’s reproductive health and family planning. Mary Rossi

Mary Rossi, University of Minnesota, School of Nursing. Ms. Rossi teaches Maternal, Newborn and Women’s Health Nursing to undergraduate students. Her expertise includes Nurse-Midwifery Education with a special interest in women’s health among culturally diverse populations.
